The Banting Diet Experts

Banting Diet Experts are our go-to source of new information – We’d love to take credit for all of the benefits our members get out of the Banting Diet, but we can’t. That’s not to say we don’t have a team of chefs, scientists, coaches and techies who work on making our program more effective. It’s just that there are so many people we have to thank for doing the bulk of the research for us.

First things first – The Expert We Trust the Most

We follow scientists but we believe science is fundamentally flawed. Academia is riddled with vested interests, egos, hidden agendas and not-so-hidden agendas. It is well known amongst scientists that if you beat any set of data hard enough, it will tell you the truth.

We’re not trying to get promoted. We’re not funded by industry. We’re funded by members who use our service to change their lives. If we don’t deliver that, we lose our funding – Simple. With that in mind, we trust the feedback from our members.

If we had to choose between the latest study on weight loss from the best scientist in the world or the weight loss achieved by a group of our members, we would back our members day in and day out.

Although we look to the experts we trust, we use a 50/50 split between advice we take from the academic and literary experts and the advice we take from our members. Our members are the people doing the work on themselves to cause transformation in their lives and the lives of others. It is easy for us to skip a number on a graph if we’re not careful.

We call these members, our ‘studies of one’. Each member is their own case study and there is no amount of science that can tell someone who has cured themselves of diabetes that diabetes is an incurable disease. And, there is no doctor who can convince someone that they need to stay on chronic meds for the rest of their life when they have normalised their blood pressure, cured their gout and experienced any number of Banting benefits.

Our members just say ‘science shcmience. I’m keeping it real’.

With the above rant in mind, there are actually experts who believe in miracles, who spot anomalies, who challenge the status quo and who trust their patients and the data they produce.

Here are the Banting legends, why we dig them and where to find them.

William Davis

A cardiologist and bestselling author who has explored the benefits of cutting wheat from the diet; and a medical director and founder of the Wheat Belly Lifestyle Institute who has seen great success in patients who previously suffered from a variety of chronic illnesses, from arthritis to ulcerative colitis.

Ever wondered why all gluten-containing grains are on the Banting Red List? Dr Davis (and others) are strictly to blame.

Andreas Eenfeldt

A Swedish family doctor who worked in family practice for eight years and treated many obese and pre-diabetic patients using the LCHF diet; he currently runs the most successful health blog in Sweden and is the world’s most popular LCHF blogger and vlogger.

Andreas attended the Old Mutual Health Convention in 2015 in Cape Town and we have followed him ever since. We use his epic site for face-to-face video access to every LCHF expert in the world. (Andreas, you beauty!)

Alessio Fasano

A world-renowned Italian paediatric gastroenterologist and researcher; he is currently the chief of paediatric gastroenterology and nutrition at Mass General Hospital for Children in Boston, among other positions; an expert in leaky gut syndrome, coeliac disease and other gluten-sensitive conditions.

Dr Fasano’s work on leaky gut and non-coeliac glutensensitivity explains why so many people experience remarkable benefits of the Banting diet long before they hit Transformation, the rapid fat burning phase of Banting. If you’re feeling great and you can’t explain why – Fasano can.

Gary Fettke

An orthopaedic surgeon, and senior lecturer at the University of Tasmania and Australian campaigner against excess sugar and processed foods; he has seen significant improvements in the health of patients prior to surgery as a result of a low-sugar, low-carbohydrate diet; as a cancer survivor, he promotes the glucose cancer model, which hypothesises that fructose and sugar drive cancer.

Gary and Prof Noakes have something in common. Authorities have tried to silence them both but without success on both accounts. Although Gary fights the good fight, our main interest in Gary is his aversion to artificial sweeteners. It was his advice that lead us to moving all artificial sweeteners to the Banting Grey List (and wiped completely off the green list).

Jason Fung

Canadian nephrologist, with a particular interest in obesity management; qualifications include nephrology fellowship through the University of California, Los Angeles at the Cedars-Sinai hospital; work and research in kidney care has led to extensive involvement with type-2 diabetes; considered a leading specialist in the use of both LCHF lifestyle and intermittent fasting in the treatment of common diseases.

Jason is the straight talking hero of fasting. Our light touch on intermittent fasting in the phases of Banting (particularly during Transformation) is led by his books and talks. His advice also shows up in the ‘Awesome Checklist’ which we recommend to the few members who plateau or want that extra edge.

Aseem Malhotra

Award-winning cardiologist and expert on treating, diagnosing and preventing heart disease; graduated from the University of Edinburgh and trained at Harefield Hospital in London before working as a doctor in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom; published commentaries have contributed to the prioritisation of sugar reduction in UK dietary guidelines.

Aseem drew our attention to the benefits of lifestyle changes over and above just changing diet. He’s the reason the Banting Diet is actually a lifestyle and not just a low carb diet.

Tim Noakes

Emeritus Professor at the University of Cape Town in Exercise Science and Sports Medicine; renowned South African research scientist, chairman of The Noakes Foundation and member of the National Research Foundation of South Africa; the country’s leading proponent of the LCHF diet and activist for dietary guideline change.

Prof co-wrote the original Real Meal Revolution and Raising Superheroes with Jonno (our CEO). His reputation in science and his contribution to our books is at the core of our beliefs and philosophy as a company. After a controversial article Prof wrote for the Discovery Health magazine in 2010, he received 127 testimonial emails from people who had lost weight and experienced numerous benefits of Banting. These 127 emails were the very first ‘Studies of one’ that led Prof to believe in the wisdom of the crowds. They were also the first sign to us at RMR that we should consider favouring personal testimony over conventional wisdom

The Banting Red List and the Banting Green List are riddled with DrPerlmutter’s advice. David was also brave enough to publicly discuss the associationbetween neurological disorders and gluten sensitivity. The most important step during Restoration Phase is to cut out the red list, and we have made it so to be in line with Dr Perlmutter’s advice.

Stephen Phinney

Physician-scientist who has studied and researched at Stanford, MIT and Harvard universities; instrumental in research conducted on diet, exercise, fatty acids and inflammation; all-round LCHF guru. Has worked closely with Jeff Volek and Eric Westman.

Dr Phinney is the God of LCHF. We met Dr Phinney in February 2015 and have followed him closely since then. Dr Phinney’s advice led us to change the carb threshold on our program from 25g of net carbs to 30g of total carbs and we also used mostly his research to develop our phase calculator (along with a super-freak computer scientist) that now calculates how much of the fat you burn needs to be eaten and how much can come from your own fat stores – the famous macro-nutrient ratio calculator.

Mark Sisson

Athlete and endurance marathon runner who has performed independent research on modern diet and nutrition; placed 4th in the 1982 Iron Man World Championship; launched MarksDailyApple.com, a website dedicated to nutrition, exercise and the concept of the Primal Blueprint.

Mark’s open-minded approach is what led us to somewhat softening the Banting Food lists. We split the Banting Orange List into Orange A and Orange B after reading Mark’s take on how bad or not that bad some ingredients are. Sure there are ingredients that can cause damage, but Mark puts in perspective how much of some of them you actually need to eat for them to harm you (or benefit you). Gary Taubes

Award-winning science journalist and author, with master’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Stanford and journalism from Columbia; propelled the modern LCHF v LFHC debate into the public domain with his bestselling Good Calories, Bad Calories; helped shatter the perceived authority of decades of dietary dogma.

Gary’s investigative journalism exposed politicians, scientist and guidelines authorities for being generally average and for not putting their people first. He is another reason we believe in ‘studies of one’.

Has worked closely with Stephen Phinney and Jeff Volek.

Dr Westman is a bit of a champ. Eric’s work in the poorer communities of USA helped us understand the issues relating to access to real food. His opinions helped us prioritise certain elements of the Banting Food lists along with the general advice we give our members around processed food. Rather than a dogmatic, ‘absolutely not’ approach, Dr Westman helped us realise there is ‘best possible option’ approach when it comes to buying and eating food.
