Spring has a way of making you want to open every window, chuck out the stuff you don’t need, and start fresh. Funny how we apply that instinct to our cupboards and our wardrobes, but almost never to our gut, even though it’s the thing quietly running the show for your energy, your mood, your skin, and yes, how well keto actually works for you.
So this spring, let’s do the reset properly. Not a juice cleanse. Not a “detox tea.” Just an honest look at what’s been building up, and a clear plan to clear it out.
How the clutter builds up
Nobody wakes up one day and decides to sabotage their gut on purpose. It happens the way most bad habits happen: one shortcut at a time. A few too many “just this once” sugary treats. Skipping the vegetables because the meat and cheese were easier. Stress-eating your way through a rough month. None of it feels like a big deal in the moment. But your gut keeps score, even when you don’t.
And here’s the thing a lot of “keto” content won’t tell you: cutting carbs without also eating enough fibre-rich vegetables can leave your gut just as under-fed as a diet full of sugar and white bread, just in a different way.
Why your gut actually needs feeding, not starving
Your gut is home to trillions of bacteria, and the good ones (the ones linked to lower inflammation and better metabolic health) run on fibre. That’s their fuel source. When they get it, they produce compounds that help keep your gut lining healthy and inflammation in check. When they don’t, that whole system starts running on empty.
This is where a lot of keto goes sideways. Done properly, full of non-starchy vegetables, real food, and a genuine plan, keto can be genuinely supportive of gut health. Done as an all-meat, no-veg situation because someone online said “just cut carbs,” it can quietly work against you instead.
The difference isn’t willpower. It’s guidance.
The spring reset checklist
You don’t need to overhaul everything overnight. That never sticks anyway, and we’re not in the business of setting you up for a crash. Small, consistent changes win here.
- Vegetables at every meal, not just some of them. Cauliflower, leafy greens, broccoli, courgette, avocado: think of these as non-negotiable, not a garnish.
- Cut back on sneaky sugar sources. Sauces, “healthy” snack bars, and flavoured drinks are usually the biggest offenders, not the obvious stuff.
- Give your gut consistency, not chaos. Erratic eating patterns are just as disruptive as the wrong foods; your gut likes rhythm.
- Hydrate properly. Fibre needs water to actually do its job. Without it, you’re just adding bulk with none of the benefit.
- Rebuild slowly if you’ve been doing “lazy keto.” If bacon-and-cheese has been your whole strategy, don’t panic. Just start layering vegetables back in meal by meal.
Let RMR guide the reset
Most people doing this badly aren’t doing it on purpose. They’re doing it unguided, piecing together advice from wherever it comes from and hoping it adds up. It usually doesn’t.
If you’ve been meaning to reset but didn’t know where to start, that’s exactly what our 7-Day Sugar Free Challenge is built for: a clear, structured week to get you off the sugar rollercoaster and back to eating the way your gut actually needs. Free, and built by people who actually know what they’re doing.
Spring’s as good a time as any to clear out what’s not working. Your gut will thank you before your jeans do.
